Army Greens & Heartbeats

- with 1st line from Walt Whitman

For me lips that have smiles, eyes that have shed tears
Looking from my soul to yours
This is love, love of the greatest kind
These lips that have kissed perfect pumpkin pie
These eyes that change slowly in the light
Call this love; yes that’s what it is.

Started soft and slow in a small town made for country
Blue eyes meet mine, filled with numbers on a page
Teach me, help me, we know I need help
Take me out in the town
Kiss me out by the lake
Watching the stars gleam down upon the water
Chills on your forearms

Kiss these lips that dance for you
Under this moon I wait
Undo your seat belt head my way
This is it, embrace at last

Small town girl filled with big city dreams
This is the song that I lead
The melody soft as rain, loud with pain
Rhythm beating on me like a drum
This is the song that I have sung.

Run fast, faster than you came
This town will swallow you
Trapped in the forest, everything is green
Watch me watch you, as you follow your dream
Stay, stay, don’t make this choice
Slow down, come home, we’ll be okay

The concrete jungle ain’t no better babe
People are harder; mold their future with sweat
Livin’ it fast, sidewalks hug the streets that I drive
I’m jealous I don’t like this life

Fought so hard to leave the country
Can I take it back? Please let me
I’d feel better if you were here
Watching sunsets with moody air
Breathe in breathe out, this wind will blow on you too
Your body will feel the mist of my tears
Blowing up against your back
Know that I am missing you

Small town girl filled with big city dreams
This is the song that I lead
The melody soft as rain, loud with pain
Rhythm beating on me like a drum
This is the song that I have sung.

You’re covered by army blues and greens
Cameo lying in the place where my body belongs
Up against you, late in the night
Snow falling down sends shivers up my spine
Your hand slides down my thigh
This is it, embrace at last.

I wish you’d not wear that uniform
Instead you’d be in my arms
Hooah! Echoing in your heart
It’s what you chose, not me
You didn’t choose me, remember?-It was too late
That’s just how this feels.

Busy is what I am these days
Push away this pain of missing you
Fill the week with monotonous bliss
Add one more thing to my list
Write you everyday, I will, I promised.

Small town girl filled with big city dreams
This is the song that I lead
The melody soft as rain, loud with pain
Rhythm beating on me like a drum
This is the song that I have sung.

Each day might as well be a year
An hour of my life slides by in rewind
Take us back, back where we belong
Night drives through the mountainside
Put your hands on me as I kiss your neck
Slide off my shirt, as I scratch your back
This is it, embrace at last.

My story is a book full of chapters of you
Published and bound for people to judge
My ears don’t work so well these days
What do they say?-I can’t hear them.

I wouldn’t be honest if I wrote a poem about me with no you
You my dear, are half of what makes my heart beat
Full of what keeps me alive
Whispers of sad goodbyes a thousand times over
I miss you already, in the passenger seat outside my home
Lets stay here like this, we would be happy.

Small town girl filled with big city dreams
This is the song that I lead
The melody soft as rain, loud with pain
Rhythm beating on me like a drum
This is the song that I have sung.

Divide one heart into two places, this is what you’ll get
A girl living day by day until they meet again
A student going to college, a soldier taking commands
California sunshine, snowy upward lands
Yes, I check the weather where you are.

I find myself missing a lot these days
Strolling on through fields of gray
The Daisies won’t dance for me, not until you’re home
I’m waiting for you once more, always waiting
Come switch my dial from black & white to color
The screen seems fuzzy these days
You need to color my world

For now I’m lonely, but that’s okay
Soon we will meet again
I will be your airport lover, waiting for you to land
There you are, just like a dream coming towards me
You pull me in, now I can breathe
Beat, beat, my heart wakes from its sleep
This is it, embrace at last.

All That You Are

This is a turquoise necklace.

It buries me as it lies against my chest
Beaded together the way we once were

It slides against my body in the place you belong
Drapes down the front of me, smiling from the neck you once kissed

You held this necklace, the way you hold my heart
You slid off this accessory, the way you undid my feelings

This necklace moves by memories of our nights together
-Outfits I wore just for you

The turquoise blue looks like your eyes, the ones that once met mine
You look at me different now...
The same way I look at this unworn necklace...
The way it hangs for decoration in my room

A piece of time I’ve hung on a shelf

That’s all you are now, a beaded turquoise accessory.
